Porsche Carrera-gt Tires
Porsche’s Carrera GT was an exclusive, limited-run mid-engine exotic from Porsche. The Carrera GT was a showcase for cutting-edge technology, including a 603 hp V10 engine that propelled it to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The Carrera GT was going to be designed with a supercharged flat-6 boxer engine that’s much more in line with traditional Porsche tech; the V10 was designed way back in 1992 but was shelved and never went to production. This supercar draws heavily on Porsche’s experience and expertise in the motorsports world and received considerable praise from the automotive press. If you own a Porsche Carrera GT, you have a rare bird indeed: the entire 2-year production run of this car was only 1500 units.
Here at SimpleTire our team has gone through the catalog and figured out some of the best Porsche Carrera GT tires, including summer/UHP, UHP all-season, and UHP tires, and then we ranked them in Best/Great/Good order. We then used our SimpleScore system to determine a numerical value for the categories of traction, handling, and longevity for each tire. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate - Best UHP tire
We’re kicking this list off with a UHP tire, and here’s one that’s consistently made a good impression on us: the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate, a tire that drivers everywhere have come to know and love for its superb performance. Goodyear designed the Eagle Exhilarate around a silica-rich tread formulation that enhances wet-weather grip and wear properties and a tread pattern that incorporates five ribs and wide circumferential grooves. We gave the Eagle Exhilarate a superlative SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction, thanks to its dense pattern of sipes and lateral/angled grooves, Cornering, braking distances, and response to driver input are also top-notch, thanks to a flat, square footprint that’s optimized to keep the most rubber in contact with the road. Reinforced shoulders and a stiff tread face help resist the squirm and deformation that result from the inertia and G-forces of hard cornering. The internal construction of the Eagle Exhilarate is designed to be durable and stable at high speeds, with a polyester casing, and lightweight, high-tensile steel belts. Road manners and ride comfort come from two layers of polyamide reinforcement plies. SimpleTire calculated a SimpleScore of 8.6 for longevity, and Goodyear covers the Eagle Exhilarate with a 45,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. That’s a real distinct plus by itself when you bear in mind that most UHP and summer tires don’t even offer a mileage warranty at all.
2. Bridgestone Potenza RE050A - Best Summer tire
Any driver of a Porsche Carrera GT is going to want to get the most out of its performance envelope, and the race-inspired Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is an excellent choice. For the confidence you need when the streets (or tracks) are wet after a rainstorm, wide circumferential grooves and specially designed block edges are there for the most enthusiastic driving, enough for a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. You’ll notice that the Potenza RE050A’s braking, cornering, and steering response are all top-notch; its stiff sidewalls, specialized center rib, and tie bars across tread blocks reduce tire deformation and tread squirm. With that in mind, we came up with a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling. Durability is a strength of this tire as well; its polyester casing is encased by two steel belts and a spiral-wrapped nylon layer for durability and high-speed stability, along with a reinforced hard rubber sidewall filler. That’s all we needed to hear to give the tire a longevity SimpleScore of 8.3. Do remember that the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is a summer tire and its softer, stickier tread formulation will harden and lose traction on colder days. Like all summer tires, the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A should not be used if temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
3. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus - Best UHP All-Season tire
When Continental designed the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus, they wanted a tire that wouldn’t require any compromise in performance vs traction, ride quality, and noise levels – a tire that can offer the overall handling, cornering, braking, and steering response you’d expect from a UHP tire with dependable year-round grip. The Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus is an even stronger candidate when you remember that most UHP and summer use a softer, stickier tread formulation that will stiffen up and lose traction on colder days, which is when they have to be swapped for all-season tires. Continental built on the proven design of the ExtremeContact DWS06 and updated it in just about every aspect, starting with the Sport+ Tech package that delivers confident cornering ability and responsiveness. Reinforced 2-ply sidewalls and macroblocks in the tread give a driver handling that’s direct and immediate without ever being touchy or jumpy, for an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.9 in that category. For year-round grip, there’s an advanced silica-enriched tread compound for great wet-weather traction and long wear. In rainy conditions or light snow, a system of circumferential grooves, sweeping lateral grooves, and X-sipes give the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus an advantage in grip for a traction score of 9.8. Continental stands by the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (unlike most UHP tires), for a SimpleScore of 9.2 in the longevity department.
While these are the best Porsche Carrera GT tires on the market, there are plenty of other options to consider.
4. Yokohama Advan Apex V601 - Great UHP tire
Next up in our roundup is the Yokohama Advan Apex V601, a great value in a UHP tire for the Porsche Carrera GT. Control, cornering, braking, and steering response are all pretty impressive with this tire, bringing in a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling thanks to its silica-rich tread compound, reinforced shoulder and sidewall, and solid center rib. The rigid construction and excellent wear properties of the tread compound are enough for Yokohama to offer a 25,000 mile warranty (a rarity for any UHP tire) and a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity. Wet and dry weather traction are also strengths of this tire, for a SimpleScore of 8.6.
5. Falken Azenis FK510 - Good UHP tire
We’re going to round things out with the Falken Azenis FK510, a great value in an ultra-high-performance tire that far outperforms expectations for its price point. The Azenis FK510 is designed for confident cornering and braking performance with a semi-solid center rib, wide shoulder blocks, and lateral notches, for a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. The team gave this tier a SimpleScore of 8.8 for traction, and wet and dry-weather grip are enhanced with circumferential grooves and angled grooves. Longevity is admirable too, with a SimpleScore of 7.8 – the Azenis FK510 features an advanced tread compound and undertread construction with a 4D Nano design.
