3. Nokian Nordman 7: Best Winter tire
If you assume that a tire company that’s based in Finland would have plenty of experience developing tires to get through the demands of a tough Scandinavian winter, you’d be correct in that assumption. Nokian (yes, the same parent company as Nokia phones) has specialized in next-generation winter tires for decades. The Nordman 7 is designed for the absolute worst winter weather you might face, the kind of conditions where all-season tires are going to be left floundering. The Nordman 7 features a purpose-built rubber compound to stay flexible and deliver great traction in sub-freezing conditions. Where the rubber meets the road, there’s a directional winter tread consisting of deep grooves and aggressive sipes to dig into snow and slush, earning it a near-perfect SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction, as well as an 8.7 for handling. If you live in a place with that kind of winter weather, it’s best if you don’t have to go out at all, but sometimes that isn’t an option.
