Hummer H3 Tires
The H3 was the smaller version of the bigger H1 and H2 Hummers, inspired by the military Humvee vehicle. The Hummer H3’s tough looks were backed up by impressive off-road ability, and it was available for a couple of years as a pickup, the H3T. It wasn’t all business, though -- H3s were available with heated front seats, Bluetooth audio, leather upholstery, a full suite of power options and much more. The Hummer H3 was powered by a 220 hp 3.5L inline 5-cyl engine with a 300 hp 5.3L V8 as an option, along with full-time dual-range 4WD and optional locking differentials. The H3 was also available in a pickup truck version, the H3T. The H3 was discontinued in 2010.
Of course most people with Hummer H3s want to make the most of their truck’s 4WD and off-road capability. At SimpleTire, we’ve compiled some of the best Hummer H3 tires using SimpleScore, including all-terrain, mud-terrain, and winter tire options. So without further delay, let’s go ahead and dive in for a closer look:
1. Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - Best All-Terrain tire
So we start off with the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. According to Falken, the 3W stands for Wet, Winter, and Wear. That’s fair enough, since the Wildpeak A/T3W has the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake designation for severe winter service. Grip comes from an aggressive all-terrain lug tread with a tread depth that’s a full 19/32”, along with lugs that wrap around from the shoulder onto the sidewall for improved lateral traction. That’s enough for us to give the Wildpeak A/T3W a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. The Wear part of the 3W designation is also a strong point – the Wildpeak A/T3W has a tough silica-infused tread formulation, step-down features, and support ramps for off-road durability, a reinforced sidewall, and heat diffuser technology to protect the tire’s internal construction. That’s enough for Falken to stand behind the Wildpeak A/T3W with a 55,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, and enough for SimpleTire to award a SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. The Wildpeak A/T3W is a tough all-terrain tire that doesn’t sacrifice too much in the way of road manners and civilized behavior on the pavement, for a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling.
2. Toyo Open Country M/T - Best Mud-Terrain tire
If you’re the kind of driver who likes to get down and dirty with your Hummer H3, playing around in thick, gloppy mud, or doing some aired-down rock crawling, mud-terrain tires might be the way to go for you. The Toyo Open Country M/T is a mud-terrain tire that gets high marks from us all the way around. The Open Country M/T is a tire that’s built for off-road grip, with an aggressive hook-shaped tread block design, tough shoulder lugs, alternating scalloped, open shoulder blocks, and a high-void tread pattern with stone ejectors that allow it to easily shed mud and debris so there’s always a clear section of tire to dig in. That’s enough for a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. A tough tread formulation and damage-resistant construction add up to a longevity score of 8.4 in SimpleScore (we’d rate it higher but like many mud-terrain tires, the Toyo Open Country M/T doesn’t have a manufacturer’s treadwear warranty). Drivability on the pavement and out on the highway is also great, with minimal wander and good road manners at higher speeds, for a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling.
3. Cooper Discoverer Snow Claw - Best Winter tire
For drivers in parts of the country that regularly have heavy snow and temperatures low enough that the snow doesn’t melt and sticks around for weeks at a time, winter tires can be the only thing that can get you through it (when all-terrain tires can’t). The Cooper Discoverer Snow Claw is our pick for a winter tire for the Hummer H3. Cooper starts off with a specialized winter rubber compound that stays flexible for improved traction in subfreezing weather, molded into an aggressive winter tread pattern that’s dense with sipes and features Snow Grooves that actually retain snow for snow/snow friction. In case things are icy, the Discoverer Snow Claw is pre-drilled for easy installation of studs (check your local and state laws for the legality of using studded tires). That’s enough winter cred for a SimpleScore of 9.0 for traction. Durability is also great, with a damage-resistant rubber compound and robust internal construction, for a SimpleScore of 8.0 for longevity (note: there is no mileage warranty for this tire). Those tread elements and the Discoverer Snow Claw’s overall design also mean great control, steering response and shorter braking distances, for a SimpleScore of 9.1 for handling. Not surprisingly, the Cooper Discoverer Snow Claw has the industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for winter service.
While these are the best Hummer H3 tires on the market, there are plenty of other options out there. Here are a few more you might want to consider:
4. Firestone Destination X/T - Great All-Terrain tire
Here’s another great choice for an all-terrain tire (or to be more precise, an extreme-terrain tire), the Firestone Destination X/T. The Destination X/T gets the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake designation for traction, with an aggressive all-terrain design that features staggered shoulder lugs, open shoulder slots, a high void ratio, full-depth sipes, and wraparound lugs at the shoulder, earning a SimpleScore of 9.1 for traction. A damage-resistant rubber compound, reinforced construction, and a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty add up to a SimpleScore of 8.0 for longevity. Along with tough, dependable off-road traction, the Firestone Destination X/T offers good road manners, ride quality and noise levels on the highway, with good control and steering response: SimpleScore of 9.1 for handling.
5. General Grabber X3 - Great Mud-Terrain tire
We wrap things up with another choice for a mud-terrain tire, the General Grabber X3. The Grabber X3 is tough enough for rock crawling over sharp stones, stumps, and other rough terrain, with a durable 8-ply rating, damage-resistant tread compound, durable steel belt package, and General’s Duragen technology, for a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity. With its aggressive off-road tread, shoulder scoops, and multi-angle gripping edges, we give the Grabber X3 a solid 8.9 for traction and another 8.9 for handling, as its cornering, roadholding, braking, and highway manners are all good as mud-terrain tires go. We’d also like to note that select sizes of the General Grabber X3 are available with a red-letter sidewall that looks fantastic on a variety of trucks (including the Hummer H3).
