Ford Excursion Tires
Introduced in 1999, the Excursion was Ford’s jumbo SUV that was based on the F-250 Super Duty pickup truck. This big, three-row SUV was designed as a direct competitor for the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon. The Excursion featured V8, V10, or PowerStroke Diesel power engines, and was available in XL, XLT, or Limited trim levels. Its reception in the automotive press was tepid, receiving dubious accolades like “the biggest sport utility on the planet,” and spikes in gas prices in the early 2000s didn’t help matters with the thirsty Excursion. Most buyers thought it was just too much truck, as the Excursion never lived up to sales expectations and was discontinued in 2005. Interestingly, the Excursion has had a pretty good second life in the aftermarket, including stretch limo, armored car, and other specialty versions.
Here at SimpleTire, we’ve gone through and rounded up some of the best Ford Excursion tires, including all-season, all-terrain, and winter light truck tires, then ranked all of them in Best/Great/Good form with our SimpleScore rating system. Ready to go in for a closer look? Here are our picks:
1. Toyo Open Country A/T III - Best All-Terrain tire
Since the brawny Ford Excursion was available with a 4x4 drivetrain to be just as at home off the pavement as on the highway, there needs to be at least one all-terrain tire choice in our lineup. The Toyo Open Country A/T III is exactly the kind of tire you need for traction and durability to safely get you through fun forays on sand, snow, mud, or rocks. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the low noise, responsive handling, good road manners, and comfortable ride that the best all-season tires have to offer. When you see it in writing like that, it sounds like some pretty lofty expectations, but the Toyo Open Country A/T III is exactly that kind of all-terrain tire. Internally, the Open Country A/T III is designed with a durable cut-and-chip-resistant rubber compound, polyester casing, two steel belts, and a spiral wrap polyamide cap layer. Toyo backs the Open Country A/T III with a 65,000 mile manufacturer tread life warranty, which registers the Open Country A/T III with a solid SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity. The symmetric all-terrain tread has a high void ratio so it easily ejects stones, mud, and debris as the wheel turns, leaving a clear section of the tire to dig in. It also features an extra-deep tread for long wear as well as traction. Unsurprisingly, the Toyo Open Country A/T III has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service, which helped the tire achieve a 9.7 traction score. Cornering, braking, and steering response are also confident and direct without being overly touchy, thanks to the shoulder design, sipe pattern, and stable internal construction of the Open Country A/T III for a SimpleScore of 9.3. All in all, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a robust, capable choice for your Ford Excursion with performance that’s equally in its element on or off paved surfaces.
2. Goodyear Winter Command LT - Best Winter Tire
Goodyear’s Winter Command tires have been an excellent choice for winter traction for years, and they beefed up their size, durability, and load capacity with an LT size. The Goodyear Winter Command LT is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service, thanks to a combination of a tread compound that stays flexible at subfreezing temperatures, Goodyear’s directional V-Tred grooves that expel water and slush from the contact patch, and Adaptive Block Cuts and Adaptive SipeGrip System. The Winter Command LT is also pre-drilled for easy installation studs in case an ice storm turns your roads hockey rink-slick (always check local laws – studs are not legal in many states and restricted to certain months in others). Put that all together and you get a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Cornering, steering response, braking, and control are all stable, predictable, and confident for a SimpleScore of 9.8 for handling. The Winter Command LT does dip somewhat in longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.6. That’s not surprising, since the softer, more flexible rubber formulation of winter tires isn’t designed for year-round use. Winter tires wear quickly when temperatures are above 40-45 degrees F and tire manufacturers advise against using them on warmer days.
While these are the best Ford Excursion tires on the market, there are plenty of other tires to consider:
3. Falken Wildpeak H/T02 - Great All-Season Tire
With the Falken Wildpeak HT02, Falken set out to redefine the highway/all-season tire for light trucks. Let’s just start by saying that we’re pretty impressed with this tire’s durability; with its silica-rich heavy-duty rubber compound, reinforced upper sidewall to resist damage from rough use, support bridges that augment tread rigidity, and 3D Canyon Sipes that help stabilize the shoulder. It’s covered by a 70,000 mile warranty from Falken – and we give the Wildpeak H/T02 a SimpleScore of 9.9 for longevity. All-season traction is great too, thanks to those sipes and a combination of circumferential and lateral grooves – enough for a SimpleScore of 8.7. The Wildpeak H/T02 is designed for confident cornering and braking with civilized road manners and overall drivability, for a SimpleScore of 8.5 in the handling department.
4. Nexen Roadian ATX - Great All-Terrain tire
We’re going to close out our list with the Nexen Roadian ATX, a great value in a durable, versatile all-terrain tire. Unlike many other tires, the Roadian ATX’s rubber compound is designed to provide traction and durability even as the tire’s tread wears down, along with 3-ply construction, extra rigidity for load capacity, and a tough reinforced sidewall. Nexen covers the Roadian ATX with a 65,000 mile warranty, which we figured was enough to warrant a solid 8.5 SimpleScore for longevity. The Roadian ATX is a capable and dependable performer on or off the pavement; it’s certified with the industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake designation for severe winter service and is designed with an aggressive all-terrain tread pattern with wide zigzag grooves and robust tread blocks. Whether it’s dry, muddy, sandy, snowy, or slippery, this is a tire that’s up to the job and we give the Roadian ATX a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction. All those design factors also mean steering response, control, and cornering that are dependable and civilized on- or off-road, and helped the tire achieve a handling SimpleScore of 8.7.
