  • Trailer tires tend to have special design needs for trailer duty. They must handle heavy loads, deliver year-round traction, have good heat dispersal for long hours of towing, and track in a predictable straight line with minimal wander or sway. Of course, trailer tires for lighter loads (motorcycle trailers, equipment haulers, etc.) have different design bullet points from tires made for heavier RV trailers or livestock haulers.

The Westlake STR is a great example of what a specialty trailer tire is all about. It’s designed for safe and dependable transport for heavier trailer duties and has top-quality materials and manufacturing for long, confident hours of highway towing duty. But don’t just take us at face value on this. Let’s go in for a closer look at this product line review:

    Features and Benefits

    • Long-wearing heavy-duty tread formulation
    • Low rolling resistance helps save on fuel bills
    • 2-ply polyester casing with two high-tensile steel belts and nylon cap ply for durability and stability at highway speed
    • Tread wear indicators built into the base of tread grooves
    • Reinforced sidewalls for extra load capacity, stable tracking on the highway
    • Rated for 75 mph
    • All-season tread pattern with wavy circumferential grooves that resist hydroplaning by evacuating standing water from the tire’s contact patch
    • Overbuilt construction means longer service life and enhanced load rating for heavier trailers
    • Weather-resistant tread formulation stands up to UV rays

    Pros and Cons

    PROS:

    • Good all-weather performance
    • Heavy-duty construction for tougher towing jobs
    • Dependable tread compound with great wear properties
    • DOT approved

    CONS:

    • Not for vehicle use

SimpleTire’s view on Westlake STR Radial Trailer tires

Westlake is a manufacturer known for a line of quality light trucks and automotive tires at affordable prices, and the STR Radial is no exception. The STR Radial’s robust construction is designed for heavier loads and long service, and it’s a great choice for camper trailers, boat trailers, livestock transports, or any other heavier load ratings and heavy trailer duties. The all-season tread and construction of the Westlake STR Radial Trailer are inspired by Westlake’s light truck tire designs. Features like high-tensile steel belts, double polyester plies in the casing, and double nylon plies in the tire’s cap layer cut the risk of tread separation and ensure that the STR Radial Trailer is up to the job.

We have an important note: while a tire like the Westlake STR Radial might look the same as a light truck tire, trailer tires have a completely different architecture and set of design specs. Under no circumstances should trailer tires be used on a vehicle – just look for the “ST” or “STR” designation on a tire’s model name to be sure.
