Have you got a sedan, minivan, crossover, or coupe and you’re in the market for an all-season tire? There are so many options for all-season tires out there, and it can be pretty overwhelming especially since the basic features and designs seem so similar. They’re not all created equal, though, and usually all-season tires are a “you get what you pay for” proposition.
That’s where the Toyo Extensa A/S II comes in. The Extensa A/S II is designed for long wear (with a surprising treadwear warranty), consistent traction for braking and cornering in wet or dry conditions, good road manners, and a quiet, comfortable ride. And yes, those are the same kinds of claims you’ll hear about a variety of all-season tires from various brands, but the Extensa A/S II also comes with Toyo’s reputation for quality, and at a value-oriented price point.
Don’t just take our word for it, though. Let’s jump in for a closer look with this Toyo Extensa A/S II review.
Features and Benefits
Toyo is quickly becoming one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, in large part because of their commitment to engineering excellence. Their tires are built utilizing an A.T.O.M. concept, which stands for Advance Tire Operations Module and ensures that each tire is perfect before leaving the factory. All of their tires, including the Extensa A/S II, follow this process, and this particular tire blends the A.T.O.M. concept with industry knowledge to make an all-season tire that gives drivers everything they crave and more.
- Silica-rich tread compound is designed for long, even wear, low rolling resistance, and dependable traction in wet weather
- Four wide circumferential grooves channel water away from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning effect in standing water
- Multi-wave sipes and lateral grooves enhance wet weather traction
- Ribs are designed for improved weight distribution and contact with the road to prevent irregular wear and boost stability
- Footprint is optimized to put the most rubber in contact with the pavement
- Tread pitch is computer tuned to help keep road noise to a minimum
- Polyester cord casing with two steel belts and nylon reinforcement ply for extra strength and durability
- Backed by a 75,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty
Pros and Cons
So, is this the right tire for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the Extensa A/S II’s strengths:
PROS:
- Generous treadwear coverage
- Available in a wide range of sizes for various fitments
- Good wet and dry traction
- Quiet, comfortable ride
- Affordable
Unfortunately, no tire is perfect and that’s true for the Extensa A/S II as well:
CONS:
- Doesn’t do well in deep snow or hard winter weather
- Handling and cornering could be better
SimpleTire’s view on Toyo Extensa A/S II tires
The market is flooded with all-season tires for sedans, coupes, minivans, and crossovers, and for good reason. For most drivers, all-season tires fit the needs and expectations they have for tread wear, ride comfort, year-round traction, and overall performance. We feel that the Toyo Extensa A/S II is a standout performer thanks to its excellent treadwear coverage, next-generation tread compound (which also means lower rolling resistance and improved fuel economy), and dependable wet-weather traction. It’s an especially strong option when you consider the price point and value vs much more expensive tires.
It’s true that the Toyo Extensa A/S II doesn’t deliver great traction in deep snow or slush, but most all-season tires don’t do well in those conditions since that’s not really what they were designed for. That aside, the Toyo Extensa A/S II is the kind of all-season tire that does most things well. It’d be a great all-season option for most drivers and will provide years and years of dependable service.
