Tires are really good in the snow and wet conditions! I will buy them again, and would highly recommend them!

Italy-based global tire brand Pirelli needs no formal introduction. It has already set a benchmark with its cutting-edge technology, high-end production excellence, and passion for innovation, which truly reflects in the tires it makes.
The Pirelli Ice Zero FR is said to be the brand’s gem of a tire that’s made for Nordic winter conditions and provides a superior level of stability, control, performance, and excellent driving comfort. It is made for use on mid-size cars, sedans, CUVs, and SUVs, and also features outstanding run-flat technology. But, can this premium winter tire really offer what it promises to the purchasers? Let’s find out in this Pirelli Ice Zero FR tire review.
Features and Benefits
The Pirelli Ice Zero FR has everything that’s expected in a winter tire. It has a flexible rubber compound to offer consistent grip on the road when the temperature falls below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, it can tackle snow, ice, and slush to provide strong traction during extreme winter conditions. Though it can’t be pinned with studs, the new-gen technologies and features make it capable enough to offer superb control in winter weather conditions. Let’s have a look at these state-of-the-art technologies and features the Ice Zero FR gets.
- Enhanced winter weather performance – The Ice Zero FR features an in-built water escape accelerator and high sipe density in the central block that increases snow retention and tire grip, thus enhancing handling and control on snow.
- Excellent high-speed stability – The tire gets multi-active 3D siping technology that keeps the tread blocks stable while driving at higher speeds.
- Superior grip in challenging road conditions – The optimized footprint and variable tension control system of the Ice Zero FR promote better traction and braking alongside offering excellent grip in challenging road conditions.
- Maximum traction on a variety of surfaces – The directional tread pattern of this tire is engineered for enhanced grip and traction on a variety of surfaces.
- Run-flat performance – The Ice Zero FR features Pirelli’s cutting-edge Runflat technology that provides superior control in emergency conditions and lets you continue driving even during rapid loss of inflation pressure.
- Attractive and sporty design – The wider footprint, detailed tread design with an arrow-shaped directional pattern, and premium-looking sidewalls give the Ice Zero FR an attractive and sporty stance that enhances the overall appeal of the vehicle.
Pirelli offers the Ice Zero FR in a wide range of sizes that vary between 14 to 20 inches rims, making it compatible with a larger set of vehicles. Various tests and customer reviews indicate that the tread of this tire lasts longer, however, officially the tire isn’t backed by any manufacturer tread life warranty, which usually gives some clarity on a tire’s tentative life time.
Pros and Cons
Now that you know the key features of the Pirelli Ice Zero FR, let’s look at the pros and cons of this tire. Here are the positives of this tire:
- Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified
- This tire is optimized to provide good handling and grip on snow.
- The comfort and noise levels of this tire are fairly good.
- Offers dynamic handling in dry and wet conditions.
- Outstanding acceleration and braking on dry surfaces.
- Well-carved tread design with premium-looking sidewalls.
- Run-flat running capability during the rapid loss of air pressure.
The positives of the Ice Zero FR are very impressive, but to make an informed decision, you must not ignore its negatives.
- Its braking performance on ice and snow isn’t satisfactory.
- Rolling resistance is average as compared to some of its peers.
- Some competitors are better at aquaplaning resistance.
- No limited manufacturer tread life warranty is offered.
SimpleTire’s view on Pirelli Ice Zero FR tires
The Ice Zero FR is a good choice for those who need a winter tire that offers excellent handling and grip on snow, enhanced comfort, and doesn’t bother much with higher tread noise levels. On dry surfaces, its acceleration, handling, and braking performance are admirable. However, the braking performance on ice and snow isn’t the best.
The handling of this tire in wet conditions is better but on the flip side, some competitors surpass when it comes to aquaplaning resistance. The pricing of this tire is very subjective. If you compare it with brands like Nexen and Nokian, you will find it a bit costly, but if you compare it with brands like Continental, you might not hesitate in paying a few bucks extra to own this tire.
One big advantage of this tire is its excellent run-flat driving capability. Another thing we found good is its premium design that subjugates the rivals like Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice, Continental VikingContact 7, Nexen Winguard Ice Plus, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3, and Continental WinterContact TS860 S.
Vehicles the Pirelli Ice Zero FR is a good replacement tire for
Compatible with mid-sized cars, premium sedans, and SUVs, the Pirelli Ice Zero FR can be a good replacement choice for vehicles like Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Volkswagen CC, Acura TLX, Cadillac CT5, Volvo S90, Genesis G80, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 3-Series, and Lexus ES350.

I drove these last year for my vw cc. I live in the snow belt of western NY. For a pirelli, im dissatisfied. It did great on dry and snow packed roads. But for ice and slush, forget about it. Floated right over slush every time, dangerously. Did not get any better traction on ice than all seasons either. After one season the tread was half gone. On hard packed snow areas its great, but not on ice or slush and the name has ice right in it so I expected otherwise. I will limp through this winter with them as I paid $175 each and want to get my moneys worth out, but cheap $100 Chinese snow tires do far better. You are only paying for a name.
Have been running these tires on a Corolla and a Honda Civic they are Excellent Winter tires they grip very well don't make a lot of noise and are smooth on highway. I would highly recommend these tires to anyone looking for snow tires that dont want to hear the typical loud tread of snow tires..
Good handling. Happy with purchase. Can't rate winter traction fairly at this point because pretty mild winter but on the days it's been wintery they've done great. Not at all disappointed with this purchase.
So far so good. Running these on my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT. They grip very well in both dry and wet conditions up to 60*F (I haven't driven these in higher temps). They work well in snow and ice as well. I took them out in 4-6" fresh snowfall and they ran great. They seem to grip really well on rough ice from run off water freeze over as well. Very happy overall. No info on treadlife as they are still newer.
Excellent grip on ice. Snow and wet road traction is good too. Dry road feel is better than I expected at highway speed. I haven't had a chance to fully test out dry road traction completely. My previous winter tires were Sottozero Serie 2 which had excellent dry road grip and feel but were not so good on ice and snow.
First time trying this tire and it is the best winter tire that we've ever bought. We had approximately an 8 inch snow this past weekend, followed by ice. My car went through the snow and ice. Only issue is some road noise, but I will take it all day long to feel safe on the road when bad weather comes.
These tires exceeded my expectations. I drove them on ice, compacted snow, and 3 inches of fresh snow this morning and clear highway and slush this afternoon. They offer amazing traction on all surfaces and felt very good on the highway with little noise. I think they may have a little less steering feel at highway speed than my previous winter tires (Pirelli Sottozero serie 2) but way more traction. The trade-off is definitely worth it for me. My 2014 WRX was an oversteering pig in the snow with the performance winter tires before but now it hooks up like a snow rally machine with these studless winter tires. SimpleTire.com offered excellent pricing but I was worried that I would get old stock. I was glad to see that the DOT date was mid 2016! The free shipping was fast too.
