  • Dunlop Enasave

Now part of the Goodyear family of tires, Dunlop can fully leverage Goodyear’s manufacturing prowess, technical and design excellence, manufacturing and distribution for their next-generation tires, and the Dunlop Enasave is a great example. The Enasave is an eco-conscious all-season tire that’s featured as original equipment on select Toyota, Lexus and Scion models, and is packed with features and innovations that make it a great value and a great performer. Let’s go in and get a closer look at what this tire is all about with this Dunlop Enasave tire review:

    Features and Benefits

Here’s some of what the Dunlop Enasave has to offer:

    • Specialized tread compound is engineered for long wear, great wet-weather traction and low rolling resistance, helping to save on fuel costs in the long run
    • Symmetric all-season tread provides a uniform footprint shape for even wear, great braking and handling, reduced rolling resistance
    • Circumferential and angled grooves divert water from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning on wet pavement
    • Independent tread and shoulder blocks are reinforced to resist tread squirm and deformation, for precise cornering and handling ability
    • Polyester cord casing with twin high-tensile steel belts and spiral wrapped polyamide cap ply
    • Tread pitch is randomized and computer-tuned to keep road noise low by neutralizing certain frequencies and pitches
    • Sipes in tread are designed to multiply the tread’s surface area and traction with hundreds of hair-thin biting edges that chew through slush and snow for winter performance

    Pros and Cons

    PROS:

    • Low rolling resistance helps to cut emissions and save fuel over the life of the tire
    • Handling is capable and predictable
    • Great traction on wet roads or in light snow
    • Low noise and a refined ride

    CONS:

    • Not good in heavier snow
    • No limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty
    • Ride quality can be a little choppy on some pavement surfaces

SimpleTire’s view on Dunlop Enasave tires

More and more drivers are becoming more eco-conscious; with gas prices stuck at a fairly high number and emissions being a concern, it’s good to know that your choice of tires can help with fuel costs. Dunlop designed the Enasave around reduced rolling resistance, all with the idea that lower friction to get a vehicle moving and then keep it moving will reduce the work the engine and drivetrain have to do. Along with the Toyota, Scion and Lexus models we mentioned above, the Enasave is featured as OEM on Mitsubishi’s i MiEV all-electric city car, for just that reason.

Are you familiar with SimpleScore? SimpleScore is the ratings system that the SimpleTire team came up with to give you a quick at-a-glance idea of a tire’s strengths and weaknesses. We take into account manufacturer info, technical details, the tire’s specs, customer reviews and other data points, then we distill that to a 1-10 numerical value for the categories of traction, handling, longevity and an overall average SimpleScore. For the Dunlop Enasave, the SimpleScore numbers are:

    Dunlop Enasave:

    • Traction: 8.2
    • Handling: 8.0
    • Longevity: 8.0
    • Overall average SimpleScore: 7.9

That’s a pretty respectable showing for a tire that comes in at such an affordable price point.

Handling and steering response with the Enasave might not be what you’d expect from a performance tire, but it shows few vices and is stable and predictable in the twists and turns. The Enasave’s ride quality is composed and comfortable, with low noise that can get a little louder on some pavement surfaces. On wet pavement or light snow, the Enasave performs confidently – yes, it can lose traction in heavier snow, but that’s not what a tire like this was designed for.

Overall, we’d say that the Enasave is a great all-around performer with plenty to recommend it, and it’s an especially good option for subcompacts, smaller crossovers, hybrids and EVs. Low rolling resistance does make a difference with a tire like this (especially for EVs that need to squeeze every last mile out of their battery and range), and in the future it’s going to be a priority for more and more tires.

I just turned 74k miles on these tires, OEM on my 2017 Prius. Great majority are highway miles, 120 mile a day commute. Rotated with oil changes every 10k. They could go longer, but I feel it's time to replace them with same. I have found most OEM tires are junk, so I have to praise Dunlop here.

OEM tires on my Mitsubishi mirage 2014. Prone to premature wear (30k miles) despite regular rotation and alignment. Also prone to sidewall bubbles from potholes a regular New England occurrence. Handle fine in snow til down to 3/32nds.

So far so good. These replacement tires seem no different than the original tires equipped with the car. Finding replacements for the Mitsubishi I-MiEV has proven more than challenging and I had to resort to online shopping to get the tires. (Even in San Jose, CA I could not locate any.) I thank SimpleTire for stocking these and solving my tired problem.
