  • One of the largest tire producers in the world, Cooper has a strong reputation in the tire industry. For use on passenger vehicles, light trucks, SUVs, and commercial trucks, Cooper Tires manufactures tires under the Cooper name.

Installing a full set of winter tires is a good idea for driving in extreme weather, snow, and ice. The Cooper Discoverer True North is a winter tire that is developed for coupes, sedans, CUVs, SUVs and light trucks. Even in tough winter weather conditions, these tires will provide the necessary traction.

Is this tire the most suitable one for your car? To learn more, let's take a look at the Cooper Discoverer True North Tire review.

    Features and Benefits

Winter tires are specifically designed to match the demands of driving in harsh winter weather conditions. They are specifically developed for improved grip and control in winter conditions, down to the chemical components in the tread rubber. Let's see if the Discoverer True North has these qualities of a true winter tire.

    • Enhanced winter traction: The asymmetric tread pattern and high silica content of the tire improve traction on ice and snow-covered roads. To ensure a superior performance, the high siping density tightly clings the ice and snow-covered road surface.
    • Boosted handling: Wider tread blocks in this tire’s tread pattern ensure constant tire contact with the road. They also increase the stability and steering response in all types of winter weather. The tire's structure is stabilized against the driving pressure that affects it in this way, and the steering responds to the driver's commands more quickly and precisely.
    • Cornering ability: The numerous biting edges on the huge outer shoulder tread blocks while the tires are moving improve cornering performance. This improves the power and cornering abilities.
    • Reduced risk of hydroplaning: When driving over standing water, the large circumferential grooves and angled lateral notches of the tread remove water and slush from below the tire's footprint and avoid hydroplaning.
    • Increased durability: A polyester casing and two steel belts are included in the tire's interior structure to enhance its shape and minimize deflection under driving pressure. The tire's longevity and ability to closely follow the road surface are both enhanced by the polyester casing.
    • Smooth ride: As the polyester shell absorbs the shock of driving, the tire reduces the road vibrations perceived in the car's cabin, producing a smooth ride.

    Pros and Cons

Have you finally found the ideal winter tire? Let’s consider the pros and cons of these tires before making a decision.

    • Winter tread pattern to enhance traction in ice, snow, and slush.
    • Large circumferential grooves and angled lateral notches remove water and slush from the tread.
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified to ensure great winter traction.
    • Reinforced dual steel belt and polyester internal construction to boost durability.
    • Wider tread blocks in the tread boost handling.
    • Snow groove technology and extra siping to enhance snow traction.
    • Smooth ride.

Even with all of these pros, the Discoverer True North tire has some drawbacks in a few areas, such as:

    • Should not be used when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • No mileage warranty.
    • Might wear easily.
    • Slightly more expensive than the competitors.

The best thing I can say about these tires is that there's virtually no noticable difference in how the vehicle drives in normal conditions from the regular 3-season Firestones that it normally wears. Quiet, handles and rides well. When the snow falls, though, these made a world of difference.

Our area averages about 110" of snow per season. I haven't dealt with deep snow yet, but these tires on our Subaru Forester have done well with ice and with light snow. They've also done well with rainy roads, but stationary, on a dirt incline with many wet leaves, they (or the vehicle) struggled just a bit, but eventually did fine.
