1. Bridgestone Potenza Sport - Best UHP tire
Let’s kick this off with one of our favorite choices in a dedicated UHP tire, Potenza Sport from Bridgestone. The Potenza Sport is designed to offer the best of both worlds: confident traction and quiet, refined ride quality, along with an exuberant, uncompromising driving experience on wet or dry pavement. Bridgestone designed the Potenza Sport around a sticky silica-rich tread formulation that delivers excellent adhesion and mechanical grip with the pavement, molded into a performance-oriented tread pattern that’s redesigned to ensure the most rubber possible in contact with the road. Four wide circumferential grooves route water through and behind the tire’s contact patch to aid wet–weather performance and resist hydroplaning. For cornering response and wet-weather traction, a network of 3D sipes enhances tread stiffness, and a tuned tread pattern neutralizes certain frequencies and overtones to ensure low noise on the highway. Looking through our calculations, that comes out to a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling and 9.9 for traction. The Potenza Sport does score a little less well in the rankings regarding longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.3. The Potenza Sport does not come from Bridgestone with a treadwear warranty (most UHP tires don’t) and isn’t suitable for winter conditions. On tires like this, their softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction in colder weather. Like all UHP and summer tires, the Potenza Sport shouldn’t be used for temperatures below 40-45 degrees F.
2. Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 - Best Summer tire
Here we go with a great choice in a motorsports-derived UHP tire, the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02. The ExtremeContact Sport 02 is the tire of choice at ROUSH Performance, AMG Driving Academy, and BMW Performance Driving School, and for good reason. The ExtremeContact Sport 02 incorporates Continental’s SportPlus technology package, starting from the ground up Continental’s exclusive Silane+ tread compound that delivers stubborn and consistent grip in wet or dry conditions. Our team gives the ExtremeContact Sport 02 a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling, thanks to its wide shoulder blocks, a wide, flat footprint that puts more rubber in contact with the road, and a continuous center rib that all give a boost to steering response and cornering ability. Traction is another real strength of this tire, with a SimpleScore of 9.7, thanks to the sticky tread formulation and a system of circumferential and angled grooves that improve resistance to hydroplaning as they channel water away from the tire’s contact patch. While many summer and UHP tires don’t come with a mileage warranty or treadwear coverage at all, the ExtremeContact Sport 02 has a 30,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty and a 2-ply casing with two steel belts and a polyamide cap layer. We give the ExtremeContact Sport 02 a SimpleScore of 8.5 for durability. Like all summer tires, the softer, stickier tread compound of the ExtremeContact Sport 02 will stiffen and lose grip in colder weather; these tires shouldn’t be used if temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
3. Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) - Great UHP tire
Next up is another great pick in the UHP category, the Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) from Hankook. The Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) is another tire that can be traced straight back to the world of motorsports, with a tread radius and footprint that are derived from Hankook’s DTM racing profile, for the best high-speed performance. That means putting more rubber in contact with the road and optimizing load distribution even during hard maneuvers, as well as very short braking distances. The wide steel belt package improves stability and high-speed handling in wet or dry conditions, and the Ventus V12 evo2 (K120)’s structure and tread formulation are designed for good heat dissipation. The Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) also is designed with Hankook’s built-in alignment indicators in the tread surface itself, giving a driver a heads-up when the vehicle’s alignment is out of spec. The Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) gets SimpleScores of 8.8 for traction, 8.8 for handling, 8.0 for longevity, and an overall average SimpleScore of 8.5.
4. Falken Azenis FK510 - Great UHP tire
Here’s another great pick for a dedicated UHP tire – the Falken Azenis FK510, a great deal in an ultra-high-performance tire that delivers far above expectations for its price point. Drivers have made note of the Falken Azenis FK510’s cornering and braking performance which is exacting and confident with a semi-solid center rib, wide shoulder blocks, and lateral notches, enough to chalk a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. Wet and dry-weather performance is enhanced by a set of circumferential and angled grooves for a traction SimpleScore of 8.8. The Azenis FK510 is also designed with Falken’s 4D Nano design, which features an advanced tread compound and undertreated construction with a SimpleScore of 7.8 for longevity.
5. Lionhart LH-Five - Good UHP tire
Now it’s time to wrap up this list with one more great affordable UHP tire, the LH-Five from Lionhart. With SimpleScores of 8.2 for handling, 7.0 for longevity, 7.6 for traction and an overall average of 7.5, the Lionhart LH-Five is designed for drivers who want to be able to push the limits of their performance vehicles. The LH-Five is designed with an all-season tread pattern with deep circumferential grooves and 3D sipes for wet-weather performance, and a solid center rib that gives a boost to steering response and straight-line stability. Large reinforced shoulder blocks help keep the best tire-to-road contact for optimized cornering and handling ability, and the advanced tread compound of the Lionhart LH-Five is designed for long wear and confident grip on wet or dry pavement.
